Caribbean journalists attend Dutch Journalism Festival
Journalists from St. Maarten, Bonaire and Aruba joined Dutch colleagues in Deventer for the festival on 18 and 19 September.
Journalists and media professionals from St. Maarten, Bonaire and Aruba attended the Dutch Journalism Festival in Deventer on 18 and 19 September, according to The Daily Herald. The newspaper reported that Huis voor de Journalistiek organised the second edition, which drew more than 1,000 journalists, media professionals and other participants for lectures, discussions and workshops.
The Daily Herald reported that the Dutch Fund for In-Depth Journalism, Fonds BJP, invited a group of Caribbean journalists and organised sessions on climate journalism and mental health and peer support. Rajesh Chintaman of The Daily Herald was among five participants in a climate journalism discussion moderated by journalist and writer Milouska Meulens.

The other panellists were Radinka Ustasia of Bonaire, Oriana Wouters of Aruba, Maarten van Gestel of Dutch newspaper Trouw and Emma van Bergeijk of nu.nl, the newspaper said. The session, titled “From Bonaire to Maastricht”, examined reporting on climate change across the Kingdom and differences in how its effects are experienced.
Wensly Francisco, Fonds BJP’s expert on Caribbean journalism, said the session was intended to bring together journalists covering climate issues in different parts of the Kingdom. The Daily Herald also reported that Curaçao newspaper Extra held a session on journalistic collaboration within the Kingdom.
Fonds BJP has increased support for journalism in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom over the past two years through grants for in-depth projects, knowledge-sharing and collaboration, according to The Daily Herald. Joëlle Terburg, the fund’s executive director, said the festival allowed journalists from Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius to meet colleagues from the European Netherlands.
