Collège Soualiga marine class cleans Friar’s Bay beach

Eighteen students from Collège Soualiga’s new Year 7 Educational Marine Area class collected litter at Friar’s Bay beach. The class has 20 students, selected for their interest in the environment and biodiversity.

Students collected glass bottles, plastic, cans and used nappies during an activity organised with Clean Saint-Martin. Association president Jean-Christophe Pineau said supporting the students fitted the group’s beach-cleaning and education work.

The class has two additional hours of life and earth sciences each week, along with presentations and field trips. Teacher Ophélie English said students will study waste management, ecosystems, birds, whales and sharks, with specialist sessions and trips at sea. The following year, the class is to study climate and environmental risks.

English said the aim was to encourage students to become spokespeople for environmental issues. She said the programme received a €4,000 grant from the Office français de la biodiversité.
