Government says work-death families may qualify for SZV support
Government said on Tuesday 29 September that Wayne Drummond’s family will get help accessing information on possible SZV benefits.
Government of Sint Maarten said on Tuesday 29 September that it will help Wayne Drummond’s family obtain information and assistance on support available under SZV-administered accident insurance. The government said families of workers who die in workplace accidents may qualify for a funeral grant and survivors’ benefits, regardless of any finding of fault.
Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina also expressed support for Minister Claret Connor and the Labour Inspectorate’s formal investigation under the Safety Ordinance (Veiligheidslandsverordening), according to the government. Mercelina said the investigation should proceed thoroughly and independently, without conclusions being drawn before it is complete.
Government said Drummond died after suffering severe burn injuries on Sunday 20 September 2026 while working at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort. It said he was medically evacuated to Colombia for specialised treatment.
Mercelina asked the public to refrain from speculation about the incident while the investigation is under way and to respect the family’s privacy.
