Irion seeks higher minimum wage in 2027 budget debate

MP Ardwell Irion called for an increase in Sint Maarten’s minimum wage during Parliament’s budget debate on Tuesday 29 September. Irion said annual adjustments no longer keep pace with the cost of basic necessities and argued that the 2027 budget does not sufficiently address pressure on households.

Irion cited fuel prices, GEBE bills and food costs as expenses affecting working families’ purchasing power. He said a larger minimum-wage increase could also put upward pressure on wages above the minimum level.

Irion said wage policy should be considered alongside measures to reduce bureaucracy, speed up permits and government approvals, improve public services, and examine taxes and other business costs. He said profit-tax reform should be part of that discussion.

He cautioned that an increase without related reforms could put pressure on smaller employers or lead businesses to pass costs on to consumers.
