Jetten tells UN Caribbean Kingdom has felt climate impacts longer

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten told the United Nations that Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten have felt the effects of climate change for longer than Western Europe, Soualiga Newsday reported. Jetten made the remarks on 24 September at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to Soualiga Newsday, Jetten called for stronger global action on climate mitigation and adaptation. He said countries should move away from fossil fuels while preparing for climate shocks that cannot be avoided, and said adaptation would need public and private investment.

Jetten also said the Netherlands wants to build partnerships and share experience in climate-smart agriculture and water management. Soualiga Newsday reported that his address included no specific new climate programme or funding allocation for Aruba, Curaçao or Sint Maarten.
