Jonathan Johnson nominated as Acting Kingdom Representative from 1 January 2027

Soualiga Newsday reported that the Council of Ministers approved the nomination of Jonathan Johnson as Acting Kingdom Representative for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. Johnson is due to succeed Jan Helmond, who has held the post since November 2017. The appointment takes effect on 1 January 2027 and will be formalised by Royal Decree.

According to Soualiga Newsday, Johnson is being appointed while the Wet openbare lichamen Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba (WolBES) is being revised. The proposed Herzieningswet WolBES would retain the office of Kingdom Representative but organise it differently. The acting appointment is intended to maintain the office during that process.

Johnson, 50, was born in Saba and served as Island Governor of Saba from 2008 to 2026, Soualiga Newsday reported. His responsibilities included public order and safety, crisis management, the quality of public administration and representing Saba. The Kingdom Representative links the Kingdom and the three public entities and has responsibilities including good governance and intergovernmental supervision.
