Police arrest 17-year-old after visitor’s chain snatched in Philipsburg
Police arrested a 17-year-old on Monday 21 September after a visitor’s chain was snatched on Cannegieter Street, Philipsburg, and say they found it on him.
A 17-year-old was arrested on Monday, 21 September, after a visitor’s chain was snatched on Cannegieter Street in Philipsburg, police said.
According to a statement from the Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM), carried by 721 News, Central Dispatch received a report of a robbery in the Cannegieter Street area at about 3pm. Police said preliminary information was that two visitors to the island were walking along the street when the suspect approached them.
The suspect tried to pull a chain from around the neck of one of the visitors, police said. The man resisted, but the suspect took the chain and fled on foot.
Members of the KPSM Bike Team who were nearby started a search once they had the suspect’s description, and found him a short time later hiding behind a dumpster on Voges Street, police said.
The 17-year-old was arrested without further incident. Police said the chain was found in his possession and seized as evidence, and that he was taken to the police station and kept in custody pending further questioning and investigation.
