Police arrest suspect after attempted armed robbery in Cupecoy

CUPECOY — Police arrested a man identified as I.L.A. on 25 September after an attempted armed robbery in the Rhine Road area, according to Soualiga Newsday, which reported information from the Police Force of Sint Maarten, KPSM. Police said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted theft by means of violence.

KPSM said two people walking in the area were approached by two armed men, who searched them for money. After the victims raised the alarm, the men fled in a vehicle, police said.

Police patrols followed a vehicle matching the description given by the victims. Its occupants later abandoned it in Simpson Bay and ran towards the beach, KPSM said. Officers caught I.L.A. after pursuing the suspects on foot. Police seized the vehicle believed to have been used in the incident and confiscated a firearm for investigation.

KPSM said the second suspect was not found and its investigation continues. Anyone with information on the suspect's identity or whereabouts can call police at 542-2222 or the anonymous tip line at 9300.
