Police report firearms, drugs and stolen vehicle cases during week of controls

The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) reported firearms, drug arrests and a stolen-vehicle case during enforcement actions from 20 to 27 September. Soualiga Newsday reported the operations, which KPSM said focused on road safety, robberies, illegal firearms and drug offences.
According to KPSM, officers found a handgun in a vehicle carrying three people near a business in Simpson Bay. All three were arrested and the gun was seized. Police said two occupants, identified as tourists, were released after questioning while the firearm investigation continues.

In Maho, police arrested the driver of a grey Kia Picanto on suspicion of receiving or handling stolen property after determining that the vehicle had been reported stolen, KPSM said. Near the airport, police said two people were arrested after narcotics were found in their vehicle. A Colombian national was transferred to the Immigration Department after police said she lacked valid documents to remain on Sint Maarten.
On 26 September, KPSM, the Detective Department, Immigration Department and Customs conducted a joint operation at several locations. Police said 23 scooters were stopped and 11 were taken into custody because their drivers lacked required documents. The operation also stopped 68 vehicles and conducted 28 preventive searches.
KPSM said officers responding to a report of masked men on two scooters in the Platinum area stopped suspects on Sr. Modesta Road. One suspect fled on a scooter, while another was arrested with a firearm, police said. Investigators are examining whether the arrested suspect may have been preparing to commit a robbery.
