Roseburg responds to killing of Peruvian candidate Susy Aponte Polo

MP Sjamira Roseburg said women should be able to take part in politics and public life without fear of violence, following the killing of Peruvian journalist and political candidate Susy Aponte Polo. Soualiga Newsday reported that Aponte Polo was killed on 19 September during a political campaign activity in Peru.

Roseburg, one of four women serving in the Parliament of Sint Maarten, said the case resonated with discussions on gender-based violence and work through the Women’s Caucus. She said women should not have to choose between using their voice and protecting their lives.

According to Soualiga Newsday, Roseburg said Peruvian authorities must determine the circumstances and motive behind Aponte Polo’s killing. She also extended condolences to Aponte Polo’s family, friends and loved ones.
