Samantha 2 towed to St Eustatius after engine shutdown

Five passengers were aboard MV Samantha 2 when it lost engine power returning from St Kitts; stranded Saba passengers later returned home.

Airport buildings and a control tower line a wide road, with green hills and clouds behind.

Passengers stranded after MV Samantha 2 had a total engine shutdown while returning from St Kitts had returned home by Tuesday 20 October. Five passengers were aboard the vessel, which tugboat NE 55 towed to the Charles A. Woodley Pier in St Eustatius on Monday 19 October.

The vessel was awaiting an inspection to determine the cause of the shutdown, a spokesperson said. A response involving MV Nora, JTB Responder, two tugboats, Harbor Patrol and MV Robby was requested after Samantha 2 was located near the St Kitts-St Eustatius border, closer to St Kitts. Passengers were told on Tuesday that their departure would be delayed, and an inspector on St Eustatius examined the vessel that day.

Makana Ferry chartered the yacht Solara to take stranded Saba passengers home from St Maarten. Solara made two trips to Saba on Tuesday afternoon, around noon and 3pm AST. A message shared by one senior passenger said they had arrived home safely.
