Member of Parliament Ludmila de Weever called for a review of how government assigns economic development responsibilities during the continuation of the 2027 national budget debate on Wednesday 4 November. De Weever said separating economic policy from fiscal policy can delay reforms because proposals involving taxes and financial incentives require the Ministry of Finance.

She said tourism, aviation, maritime affairs and licensing could remain with the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication, while government reconsiders responsibility for broader economic development. De Weever asked the Council of Ministers and Parliament to examine whether legislative changes could improve coordination.

De Weever also raised concerns about tax collection affecting seniors. She relayed an account from a resident about a senior whose bank accounts were reportedly blocked over outstanding taxes, despite an effort to arrange payment. She asked whether account blocks leave enough money for basic needs and old-age pension income.

The MP also cited a message from a Philipsburg business operator who said sections of the Boardwalk had slow trade despite cruise arrivals. The operator alleged that water taxis were taking many visitors towards the Sea Palace area. De Weever said she would raise further questions in the second round of the budget debate.
