Peterson plans amendment to shift 80% of Parliament travel budget to school repairs

MP Raeyhon Peterson said on Wednesday 4 November that he plans to introduce a budget amendment redirecting 80% of Parliament’s travel budget to repairs at public schools. Speaking during the continuation of the 2027 national budget debate, Peterson said the money would be reallocated to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, known as ECYS.

Peterson said the amendment would put Parliament’s existing travel allocation toward school facilities instead of leaving the money available for travel, including trips to Parlatino, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament. He said he intends to formally introduce the proposal during the budget process.

Peterson defended ECYS procedures governing donations and repair work at public schools. He said structural work on public property involves liability and accountability considerations, and that elected officials’ direct involvement can raise concerns about political influence.

He also asked for information on the Finance Ministry department that reviews revenue proposals from other ministries, including its staffing and any plans to strengthen its capacity. Peterson requested clarification on VROMI’s proposed economic plan for Philipsburg and how it is expected to contribute to national development.

Peterson said Parliament should scrutinise and hold government accountable rather than become directly involved in executing policy.
