Breadfruit Tree Initiative remains in preliminary planning
Minister Claret Connor says pest-control concerns are being discussed as government develops its Breadfruit Tree Initiative.

Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Claret Connor said on Wednesday 21 October that government has begun discussions on pest control as it develops the proposed Breadfruit Tree Initiative. He said concerns about monkeys, iguanas and other pests must be considered before the plan moves beyond preliminary planning.
According to Connor, discussions have started with departments in the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT). Further consultations are expected with the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure (VROMI) and the Ministry of Justice.
Connor said addressing the pest issue cannot be the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA) alone. He described the initiative as part of an effort to encourage households and communities to grow food and reduce dependence on outside sources.
Connor said government intends to continue discussions with the relevant ministries. He did not announce an implementation date, distribution plan or confirmed animal-control measures.
