Coast Guard searches after vessel capsizes off Mona Island

Four survivors were rescued after a vessel carrying an estimated 50 to 60 people capsized off Mona Island on Sunday 27 September.

Motorboats tied up at a marina dock on the Simpson Bay Lagoon under a grey sky.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan said it is leading a joint search about 10 nautical miles off Mona Island after a makeshift vessel capsized on Sunday 27 September. The Coast Guard said four survivors were rescued on Monday 28 September by crew members of the motor vessel Tripiti.

According to the Coast Guard, Tripiti crew members spotted people in the water, rescued the survivors and notified the Sector San Juan Command Center. The survivors said they had been travelling with an estimated 50 to 60 people and that the vessel overturned at about 11pm AST on Sunday.

The Coast Guard said Customs and Border Protection and Puerto Rico Police are taking part in the operation. It asked mariners to stay clear of the search area and asked anyone with information to contact the Sector San Juan Command Center at 787-289-2041.
