Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA) Claret Connor said the ministry is considering a programme to distribute breadfruit trees to households and communities across Sint Maarten. In a World Food Day message for Friday 16 October, Connor said the proposal is intended to encourage local food production and reduce reliance on imported food.

The ministry has not announced a distribution schedule, the number of trees that could be available or criteria for participation. Connor said the proposal could later include other fruit-bearing trees and plants.

Connor said affordable access to nutritious food and reliance on supplies from outside Sint Maarten should be considered in efforts to improve food security. He said immediate food assistance remains needed for vulnerable households, alongside longer-term measures that help families produce some of their own food.

World Food Day 2026 is being marked under the theme, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.” Connor also thanked organisations, foundations, businesses, community groups and individuals providing meals, groceries and other support to families facing financial difficulties.

Connor encouraged households to grow food where possible, support local farmers and producers, reduce food waste, make healthier nutritional choices and share resources within their communities.
