Curaçao’s Social and Economic Council, SER, discussed a proposed Caribbean migration conference for early 2027 with its counterpart from the Dominican Republic in Madrid on 29 and 30 October, according to the council. SER said it wants to draw on regional experience in considering migration’s effects on employment, public services and social cohesion in Curaçao.

The council said the proposed conference would consider migration’s economic contribution, the conditions that allow society to benefit, and migrants’ circumstances and experiences. Earlier in October, SER senior adviser Dr. Sabrina Dinmohamed presented research on migration from the Dominican Republic to Curaçao during an online meeting with the Dominican council. Her research examines how migrants build their lives and social cohesion.

The talks were held during meetings of AICESIS, the International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions, and RICESIS, an Ibero-American network of similar councils. Spain’s Economic and Social Council hosted the meetings. SER said representatives from 27 countries discussed a transition to a more sustainable economy alongside social protection.

Raúl Henriquez, director and secretary-general; Miloushka Racamy, senior legal adviser; and Dinmohamed made up the Curaçao delegation. Racamy is AICESIS’s deputy secretary-general for Latin America and the Caribbean, the council said.
