Gumbs says personal attacks cross line from political criticism

ECYS Minister Melissa Gumbs said criticism of public policy is legitimate, but personal attacks on her or staff are not.

ECYS Minister Melissa Gumbs said criticism of political decisions, policies and elected officials is legitimate, but personal attacks, intimidation and humiliation cross a line. She said people who direct personal attacks at her or her staff should not expect continued direct access to them.

Gumbs said she has blocked some individuals on social media when their comments became personal. She described the decision as a boundary and said her responsibility to represent the public can be met through policy, decisions, public communication and government work.

She referred to an exchange involving Anguilla Minister Shellya Rogers-Webster at a media conference in Anguilla, saying Rogers-Webster responded firmly while maintaining composure and respect. Gumbs said the exchange showed elected officials can set boundaries while continuing to serve the public.

Gumbs also connected the issue to standards promoted through the education system. She questioned how adults could teach students to reject bullying, set boundaries and recognise harmful relationships while accepting similar conduct in their professional lives.
