Lacroes questions purpose and cost of November Kingdom Summit

MP Francisco Lacroes asked government to explain the purpose, cost and expected decisions of a Kingdom Summit set for 17 and 18 November.

Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina told Parliament on Thursday 1 October that St. Maarten will host a Kingdom Summit on 17 and 18 November. Mercelina described it as a government-to-government consultation involving St. Maarten, Aruba, Curaçao and the Netherlands.

According to Mercelina, the meeting is intended to strengthen cooperation among the four countries and begin a more structured, recurring dialogue. Member of Parliament Francisco Lacroes questioned what the summit would add to existing Kingdom consultation structures, including the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation, IPKO, which St. Maarten is expected to host in early 2027.

Lacroes acknowledged that IPKO brings together parliaments while the November summit would involve governments. He said the stated objectives appeared to overlap and asked why government would create another recurring consultation instead of improving existing structures.

He also asked government to explain the summit’s expected cost, agenda, authority and the decisions it expects to result from the meeting. Lacroes said Parliament and the public should be told what gap the summit is intended to fill and which matters cannot be handled through existing Kingdom mechanisms.
