MP Veronica Jansen-Webster questioned funding for social assistance and healthcare during Parliament’s continuation of the 2027 national budget debate on Wednesday 4 November. Jansen-Webster said the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor’s budget was reduced by about 4.6%, while other ministries received increases.

She said about 8.2 million was budgeted for financial assistance, although the Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor had indicated that about 10 million could be needed. Jansen-Webster also cited census findings that, she said, show about 7% of the population experiences hunger.

On overseas medical referrals through SZV, Jansen-Webster referred to information given in earlier parliamentary discussions that some emergency referrals could take about 11 days and acute cases three days. She asked whether those timelines remain accurate and what is being done to reduce delays. She also asked how often patients travel overseas for treatment without an accompanying person.

Jansen-Webster questioned a proposed increase in borrowing from about 53 million to 94 million. She asked ministers to account for 2026 projects that have started, projects awaiting implementation and preparations for 2027. She also asked for information on 2026 vacancies, positions filled and expected appointments before year-end.

She asked when proposed visitor tax legislation would reach Parliament, when revenue collection could begin, and what was being done to broaden the tax base, improve supplier payments and finalise outstanding financial statements. Jansen-Webster also asked whether the Ministries of TEATT and Finance were considering income-tax reductions or other relief linked to tourism growth, and urged consideration of food imports from the Caribbean and South America.
