VROMI and Cupecoy Development N.V. plan repairs to the Rolandus Canal in Sucker Garden starting on Monday 12 October, Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure Patrice Gumbs said. The work is valued at more than US$750,000, or about Cg1.36 million, with Cupecoy Development supporting the project through a donation.

Gumbs said the work will repair a collapsed section of King of the Seas Road, reinforce areas around seven bridges crossing the canal, and install or repair railings along affected sections. A local contractor will carry out the work, according to the minister. VROMI said it will publish work schedules and alternative traffic routes.

Gumbs said erosion around the canal has affected its drainage function and created a safety risk in Sucker Garden. He said the project is VROMI's third public-private partnership. The canal runs from Defiance to Great Bay along the eastern side of Sint Maarten, according to Gumbs.
