2022 census puts Sint Maarten population at 41,902 as median age rises
Department of Statistics census reports released on 2 November show population growth since 2011 and a rise in residents aged 65 and older.
Sint Maarten had 41,902 residents in 2022, up from 33,609 in 2011, according to additional 2022 Population and Housing Census reports released by the Department of Statistics (STAT) on Monday 2 November. The count represents an increase of 8,293 residents over 11 years.
STAT said the median age rose from 35 in 2011 to 43 in 2022. The share of residents aged 65 and older increased from about 5% to nearly 14%. About 49% of residents lived in Cul de Sac and Lower Prince’s Quarter, according to the census.

Census interviews began in September 2022, with final visits in April and May 2023. More than 32,000 people took part, STAT said.
About two-thirds of residents were born outside Sint Maarten. The Dominican Republic accounted for 9.5% of the population, followed by Haiti at 6.6%, Jamaica at 6% and French Saint-Martin at 5.6%, according to STAT. English was the most commonly spoken household language, followed by Spanish and French Creole.
STAT reported that about 31% of households had one person, while nearly half of adults had never been married. More than one-third of never-married adults said they were living with or had a partner. The census counted about 84 men for every 100 women.
The share of residents identifying as Roman Catholic fell from about 42% in 1992 to 26% in 2022, while the share reporting no religious affiliation rose from 11% to 19%, STAT said. The department has published reports on demography, education and health on its website.
