Stuart Johnson called for fair compensation, teacher well-being and investment in education at the Anguilla Teachers’ Union Biennial Conference on Friday 9 October. Johnson is Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten. He delivered the keynote at the opening ceremony at Royale Caribbean in Anguilla.

Speaking under the theme, “Standing With Teachers: Honouring Our Legacy, Advancing Our Status, Shaping Anguilla’s Future,” Johnson said teachers need safe working environments, adequate resources, professional development and respect for their expertise. He also said teachers should have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their work.

Johnson, a former classroom teacher, school principal, trade union president and Minister of Government, paid tribute to retired educators and union pioneers. He said their contribution should be recognised through improved conditions for the next generation of teachers.

He said educators carry personal, financial and emotional responsibilities while supporting students, and that teachers’ emotional health affects the support they can provide to children. Johnson also commended Anguilla Teachers’ Union President Terron Azille and the executive board, urging members to take part in the union and advocate constructively.

Johnson encouraged educators to use technology while building students’ critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, ethical judgment and cultural identity. He set out dignity, professional growth, solidarity, partnership and accountability as priorities, and called for measurable progress on conference resolutions.
