Queen Emma Bridge receives new electrical and propulsion systems

Curaçao’s Queen Emma Bridge has received new electrical infrastructure, LED lighting and an electric propulsion system.

A pontoon bridge with lit arches stretches across the harbour at dusk, with lit buildings behind.

The Queen Emma Bridge in Curaçao has received a renewed electrical system and an electric propulsion system, replacing propulsion equipment that had operated since 1987. Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning VVRP Charles Cooper marked the milestone with Marco Hoogendoorn of Holland Shipyards Group and representatives of Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA).

The work included about four kilometres of new cabling. The electrical infrastructure supplies the propulsion system, security cameras, safety barriers and lighting. Street-lights, navigation lights and other lighting were upgraded to LED technology.

A new pontoon was built for the propulsion equipment. Mechanical components on the Punda and Otrobanda sides of the swing bridge were inspected, renovated and modernised. The bridge links Punda and Otrobanda for pedestrians and swings open to allow ships to enter and leave the harbour.
